Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Horizon Housing acquired The Elan in summer 2020. This former boutique hotel, located at 1122 16th Avenue SW, will be transformed to 62 new homes for Calgarians.
Elan (noun) meaning liveliness, enthusiasm and panache or a distinctive style or flair, is the spirit in which Horizon embarks upon this unique opportunity to re-purpose studio, one and two-bedroom hotel units into homes.
The Elan also provides access to a community kitchen with outdoor patio, fitness room, meeting spaces, on-site manager’s office, and underground parking. Located in the Beltline, just off 17th Avenue SW, the building is well situated within walking distance to local amenities, services, and public transit.
An important element of home is the ability to share it with others. Horizon will be working closely with residents, neighbours, local businesses and partner agencies to build on the legacy of The Elan and foster a vibrant and integrated community for years to come.
These future homes will undergo kitchen retrofits over the coming months, to ready homes for occupancy. We thank the Beltline Neighbourhood Association and area residents for their support and patience during this period.

Located at 6624 25 Avenue NE, Horizon Housing’s latest development will see the creation of 65 new homes in the northeast community of Pineridge.
Purpose-built to meet the needs of the community and conveniently located within walking distance to public transit, shopping, and green space, these one, two, and three-bedroom homes will bring quality housing options together with thoughtful design and convenient amenities to foster a connected and inclusive community.
A lot has changed over the past month: Pineridge now has walls! Interior and exterior foundation walls of the first floor are complete, and the second floor has its foundations well underway including beams, joists, and floor sheathing. The parkade’s mechanical and electrical work is nearly complete as well. Next up, work will begin on second and third floor walls and prepping for window installation.
Underground work and site servicing on the project has progressed this past month: storm, sewer, and water lines to the building are complete. The parkade is nearly finished as well, with concrete complete and mechanical work underway. As we approach the holidays, head elves Lauri and Craig will focus on constructing the main floor walls.
Work on the site has progressed rapidly ahead of the winter season. Over the past month, foundation walls and columns were poured and parkade underground mechanical work completed. Site service work is scheduled over the coming week and concrete slab pours for the main floor will be completed later this month.
Westcor has been selected as the general contractor for this new development. Earlier this year, Westcor was recognized by the Canadian Construction Association with the 2019 Community Leader Award for their philanthropic work in communities. Westcor and Horizon Housing previously partnered to build 45 new homes in Calgary’s southwest community of Glamorgan.
Construction fencing and staging area has been established on the site and throughout this month, excavation and site shoring will take place in advance of concrete work.
Horizon Housing has begun its Request for Proposal process to select a Contractor for this new development. With anticipated selection by August 2020, a groundbreaking and construction start is slated for late summer.
