On June 4, 2015 Horizon Housing Society and two of its team members were honoured at the Calgary Residential Rental Association’s 12th Annual Awards Gala.

Building Operations Manager of the Year: Jamal Afech
Operations Manager Jamal Afech has been employed by Horizon Housing for more than 30 years. Over the years, he has seen a lot of change, including a housing portfolio that grew from two apartments and three group homes to seven apartments and eight group homes. Under Jamal’s leadership and care, Horizon Housing’s buildings have remained a trademark of care, competence and experienced property management. Jamal’s loyalty, strong work ethic and leadership are all traits that contribute to his personal brand of quality and care.

“You are a true success when you help others be successful. That is why I love working at Horizon Housing and will never leave. They are my family.”

Building Manager of the Year: Jess Kennedy
Outside of keeping his building clean, and providing outstanding maintenance services, Jess Kennedy doesn’t hesitate to go above and beyond. He contributes his personal time to helping Horizon Housing’s events and building tours and, as Building Manager of Bob Ward Residence, has established strong personal relationships with tenants. Jess has a quiet enthusiasm that promotes respect and pride of home among residents. He is a wonderful example of what it means to be caring, compassionate and kind.

“I’ve gotten to know the people here and their routines,” Kennedy says. “Sometimes they’ll come into my office to talk when they just need someone to listen. And if I don’t see someone for a couple days, I’ll knock on their door to see how they’re doing.”

Building of the Year (26 – 100 Units Category): Bob Ward Residence
Bob Ward Residence is a three-story apartment building located in Calgary’s southwest community of Glamorgan. It consists of 61 suites containing bachelor, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, as well as a four-bedroom unit. It boasts two common rooms, a laundry room on each floor, and a “backyard” green space complete with barbecue, community gardens and beautiful landscaping. In Horizon Housing’s 2014 Resident Satisfaction Survey, Bob Ward Residence received an average cleanliness score of 88.4%.  Since the building opened, Horizon Housing has invested $115,000 in capital upgrades to the building.

“Winning these awards, in competition with institutional and for-profit owners and property managers, serves as a testament that affordable housing really can operate at the highest standards,” says Kim O’Brien, Executive Director of Horizon Housing. “Our goal is to provide safe, secure housing to those in need. Receiving recognition from the CRRA validates our idea that this is attainable.”
